Garm was raised in one of the many Githzerai monasteries in the Elemental Chaos. His keen intellect and affinity for psionic ability garnered the attention of both his peers and masters, but unfortunately both gifts were greatly outweighed by his utter ineptitude when it came to social situations. He would constantly say the wrong thing at the wrong time, quickly earning the resentment of nearly everyone around him. Worse yet, Garm’s social stupidity was so profound that he never recognized the ire of his fellow Githzerai; he thought he was well-liked.
The final straw came when Garm angered Durth, an influential Githzerai master. Garm inadvertently questioned both Githzerai tradition and Durth’s mental prowess in one succinct sentence. While Garm’s talent was unquestionable, Durth took such offense to his utterance that he arranged to have Garm exiled to the Material Plane to live in a remote cave. And Garm happily accepted his exile when he was told that he was being honored with special training that only Githzerai of the highest potential undergo.
For months Garm sat alone in his cave, honing his mind and increasingly formidable psionic powers. He was determined to improve himself so as not to fail his brethren back home, who no doubt eagerly awaited his return.
In hope of keeping Garm away for good, one of Durth’s instructions was to seek out the many denizens of the Material Plane and earn their companionship. In Durth’s eyes, it would be only a matter of time before Garm’s social retardation lead to his untimely demise in a filthy alley. Unfortunately for Durth, the first intelligent creature Garm found opted not to kill him. Garm darted from his cave flailing his arms in eager greeting to the female Goliath, Vimaki. Luckily for Garm, Vimaki found his particular brand of idiocy somehow endearing, and permitted him to travel with her to her next destination: the city of Fallcrest.
